Chapter 13

He has found his butts and cans and now my wolf is climbing into the passenger seat of police car A44, not looking back. I’m sad to see him leave and wish he’d at least turn and give me a wave, but he doesn’t. He’s entertained me throughout the morning, just by virtue of his gorgeous presence, keeping my mind off the voices of my spirit guides and preventing me from creating any further disturbances.

I got a couple of men in serious trouble today and feel badly for both. I ought not to have done what I had, but it is so hard to stay in control. That is about to change. All I need to do is make it to the feast, and the Inspector has promised that will happen soon.

“I’m sure glad we had Peter on board this morning,” Sergeant Chris says. He’s squatting behind the van, staring at the monitor on the tailgate watching the live feed streaming from the drone. “He knows these trails quite well and with his able advice and a little luck, we should be able to get quite close with our men and equipment before having to take to our feet.”

“What have we got figured out for communication?” Inspector Finley asks. “Cell phone coverage and internet connection is next to nil from here on in.”

“We have radio waves and sat to work with.”

“Sat?”

“Satellite communication. I can get up to ten miles range with the drone on a sat setup. We’re taking both two-way radios and sat phones for communication.”

“We’re all versed in this technology?”

“Hmmm, probably not,” Sergeant Chris concedes, his eyes still glued to the monitor. “Get Sparky to give everyone a quick lesson on the phones and radios.”

“I want more than a quick lesson. It’s imperative we’re able to communicate with each other and with the outside world in case we run into trouble.”

“Sir, it’s wilderness policing.” Sergeant Chris passes the drone controls to his partner, who is sporting a unibrow and small eyes too close together. “Bring her home, Snake Eyes,” he says, rising to face the Inspector. “Those of us posted in remote areas are used to being out of touch. A wide swath of Northern Alberta has no coverage, no radio, internet, or cell phone. I suggest it’s one reason these guys have set up out here—it makes surveillance and tracking next to impossible. Makes police action dangerous. We do what we can to protect our asses and keep on keeping on. Cities don’t have the monopoly on crime.”

“I’ve had my fair share of Arctic postings and experienced all that. It was my hope we’d now have the technology to overcome those problems.”

“We’re getting there. The technology we do have is user friendly and Sparky’s a good teacher.” He looks past the Inspector to the sea of officers milling around. “Gather round!” he hollers. “We’re handing out the equipment and Constable Sparks will give you a few lessons!”

I am interested in the technology, always have been a techno geek, at least it seems so, although I can’t remember for sure.
